Acting out the Gospel
Wednesday 5:00 4B - Mary Ann Marcus and Ron Crowe: Students take turns donning costumes and reading/acting out the weekly Gospel. This is great reinforcement, because by the time all of the children have a chance to be a part, they certainly have had the Gospel repeated enough that it should sound familiar to them when they hear it again at Mass on Sunday! Rumor has it that Ms. Mary Ann even donned the Jesus beard in this one, but alas, I was too slow in getting there with the camera!
World Hunger experiment
Several 4th and 5th grade classes participated in a small-scale "Hunger Banquet" to help bring home the problem of world hunger. The class was divided according to the actual percentage of high income (15%), middle income (35%) and low income (50%) of the world's population. This equated to 2 students high, 5 or 6 middle, and 8 or 9 low. The "high income" students were treated to a yummy dessert: cupcakes, donuts, juice, etc. They were given large or unlimited portions. The "middle income" students enjoyed a one-serving smaller dessert, such as a few m&ms, graham crackers, skittles, or a cookie. The "low income" students were basically given saltines or a few animal crackers and water, and no refills were allowed. This lesson did a great job in helping the students "feel" the inequity of wealth in this world, and to discuss many aspects of it. The photos come from Jeannette Stachecki and Candice Lay's class, as well as Jenifer Flood and Kristin Hoffman's class, but other classes participated as well and really had fun!
