Sac Prep Lesson:  First Eucharist Lesson 2, Feb. 5th 2012

First Communion Lesson 2:  Feb. 5, 2012

Curriculum Materials:

Eucharist: We Give Thanks and Praise books, Chapters 4 & 5

Thank-you Card (big piece of construction paper)

Coloring sheet: Gift box

Million Dollar Activity materials (found in your mailboxes) and prize

“A Meal of Remembering” worksheet and answer key

Objective:  The children will learn that we are called to give thanks and praise to God for the many gifts He has given us, and that the Eucharist is our public celebration of thanks and praise to god through Christ. .  We will introduce at this time that we will be receiving the true presence of Jesus Christ in our First Communion!

Prior to class, please take the time to set up your classroom.  You will want to have your “thank-you” card set up and ready-to-go, as well as have the students’ seating areas prepared with crayons/markers and coloring sheet.

3:00:  We will gather in the church for an opening song.  I will speak to the children for just a moment or two as a preview of the lesson.

3:10:  Dismiss to classrooms for your lesson, as follows:

·        As you enter the classroom, instruct the children to go to their places and take a look at the coloring sheet.  It is a blank gift box.  Have them listen as you read aloud to them page 29 of your books.  When you are finished reading, ask the children to think of the gifts that God has given to them, and to write as many of these gifts as they can in the box using colorful crayons or markers.  Tell them that while they work, you are going to call each of them to come up to the big class thank-you card, and you are going to have them write one of those things on the card along with their name.  It is going to be your class thank-you card to God!  Take about 10 – 15 minutes max. to do this activity.

·        When you finish the thank-you activity, invite the children to your preferred reading area, whether that be a semi-circle on the floor, or just remaining in their seats.  Give each child a book and ask them to open to page 32.  Read the lesson on pages 32 – 33.  You can skip the activity on page 33.  Note:  Again, to keep the children engaged, you may wish to have them circle, underline, or highlight the key words as you are reading.  Some of these words will come up later in our lesson activity.  **Note:  I see that some of the books have the OLD Mass responses in them; they are all supposed to have the NEW responses!  So be sure that you go over the New Roman Missal responses when appropriate.

·        Next, skip to chapter 5 and go to page 38.  Read pages 38 – 41 with the children.  Pages 40 and 41 are the MOST KEY pages of our entire lesson this month, so do what you have to do to ensure that the students are reading along with you and are understanding.  Some strategies include stopping to review what you’ve said, asking questions about what you’ve read, allowing them to circle or highlight key words, pause in your reading to let the children supply the missing word, etc.  PRIMARY ONLY:  Do the activity on page 41.

·        When you have finished reading p. 41, it will be time to do the “million dollar” activity.  Tell the children that today’s lesson is really, really important.   Tell them that they really need to understand some of the key words that they heard today, and to help them remember and understand, we are going to do an activity called “million dollar words.”   Tell them that they will each receive THREE million dollar bills today, and that there are hints on the back of each bill about what the million dollar word is.  Give each child an envelope, and tell them NOT to open the envelope until everyone has one.  When they all have their envelopes and you say, “Go!” each child will start a hunt in the chapters we read today to find the word that is defined on the back of the bill and they should write that word on the line provided.  As each child fills in his/her bills, they should bring them up to show you and collect their “million dollar” prize!   Each child who finishes will receive the little prize, so there shouldn’t be a mad rush.

·        This last activity will be for doing in class if you have time, but if you run out of time after the Million Dollar vocabulary activity, this can be taken home to complete with parents.  Distribute a “Meal of Remembering” review worksheet to each child.  Read each clue aloud, and write the number of that clue next to the correct word that describes it.  An answer sheet will be provided for you.  While the students are doing this activity, please have the assisting teacher tear out chapters 4 and 5 from the book, staple them, and send them home with the children.

4:10: Begin your return trip to the church.  We will close with summary, prayer, and song at 4:15.
